ABOUT AFASIC CYMRU
Afasic is the UK charity established in 1968 as a parent led organisation representing children and young people with speech, language and communication impairments – working for their inclusion in society and supporting their parents and carers.
Afasic Cymru is not a service provider; therefore we can offer balanced impartial information.
Afasic Cymru was launched in 2002 and thanks to funding from the Welsh Assembly Government, we are working from two regions – Jeannette Carr (Director) and an Administrator/Development Officer are based in Cardiff Bay with Yvonne Brookes (Development Officer) in North Wales.
Until March 2009 we were also funded by The Big Lottery, therefore we are currently looking for other funding sources. Due to the current economic climate we are limited by the number of funding opportunities consequently this is a priority to enable us to continue to support both parents and professionals alike.
Services Afasic Cymru offer:
- Our helpline 0845 3 55 55 77 is open Monday – Friday 10.30 – 2.30. The helpline gives vital support to parents and carers seeking the best help for their child. Callers can discuss their difficulties in confidence and Afasic will provide as much information as possible to help and support them. Afasic is a member of the Telephone Helplines Association.
- We have introduced a FAQs page to answer some basic questions parents often ask when realising that their child has a speech and language impairment. This does not, of course, replace the UK Helpline which specialises in one to one help on a variety of speech and language issues.
- Our range of bilingual information sheets and booklets offer valuable help and information.
- We organise an Annual Conference, training days, workshops and in service training for parents and professionals.
- Afasic supports research projects often working in partnership with other organisations.
- Afasic is committed to supporting professionals within the field and also multi agencies with publications, training and information.
- We produce a Wales specific newsletter quarterly, keeping you updated with forthcoming events and news.
What does AFASIC mean?
When it was set up in 1968 it was called the Association for All Speech-Impaired Children – AFASIC for short. However, now that we have widened our age range to include young adults the original name is not a true reflection of our charity. AFASIC is pronounced ay – fay – sic.
