ABOUT AFASIC CYMRU
Afasic is the UK charity established in 1968 as a parent led organisation representing children and young people with specific language impairment (SLI) and speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) by raising awareness of this often hidden disability thus working for their inclusion in society and supporting their parents and carers. Afasic Cymru is not a service provider; therefore we can offer balanced impartial information. We provide information and training for parents – and professionals – and produce a range of publications. It works in partnership with local and national government, professional and statutory bodies and other voluntary organisations Members meet in local groups in both North and South Wales.
Afasic Cymru was established in Wales in 2002, in response to devolution and thanks to some funding from the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG); the Waterloo Foundation and more recently The Big Lottery Fund we are working from two regions. Jeannette Carr, Director is based in Cardiff together with our part time administrator, Lorraine Mulvaney and Yvonne Brookes the Development Officer who is based in North Wales.
In the current economic climate we are constantly seeking funding sources for us to continue our work in Wales, we would therefore be grateful if you could contact us if you know of any such opportunities or if your employer is looking to sponsor a charity of the month or year. All donations are gratefully received and used in Wales.
Afasic Cymru Youth Awards 2011
We were delighted by the response for nominations for the Afasic Cymru Youth Award – the closing date was 31st March and the Advisory Group, which is made up of Speech & Language Therapists, Teachers & parents, judged all nominations. Judging is not easy so Jeannette was pleased to hand over that responsibility to others.
All nominees will receive a certificate to celebrate their good work & progress. This years award winners are Bleddyn Lewis aged 18 from Barry in South Wales & Jonathon Bellis from Argoed Speech & Language Resource in North Wales. Both young men are a great inspiration to us all & will hopefully show other students who experience difficulties that they too can succeed - they should be proud of their success as indeed are the many people who have had the privilege of supporting them throughout their education and at home. Bleddyn and Jonathon will each receive a £50 gift voucher & a certificate of achievement.

Until recently we distributed a quarterly newsletter by post, however distribution in this way is proving costly – therefore future newsletters will be available to view and download from our website and sent electronically – therefore if you would like to receive the E-version then please contact Lorraine to register your email address.
