Free events held across Wales for SLCN families

Free Afasic Cymru events for families with children who have difficulties talking and understanding what others say. Thanks to funding from the Afasic Summer Appeal, The Bryony Fund and Big Lottery Wales, Afasic Cymru had a busy end to 2016 as we were able to offer several free events to the families we support across Wales. Our charity auction in North Wales took place on November 17th in St Asaph and raised over £1300 (donations still coming in). The auction had many great lots to bid on including a flying lesson with Denbigh Gliding, spa days, luxury hampers, a half day in a recording studio and lots more!

We also ran a ‘Bounce into Christmas’ event for our families in South Wales. The trampoline session was held at Infinity Trampoline Park in Cardiff and we had over 50 bouncers (both parents and kids). The children were also treated to a special visit from Father Christmas with some well-earned festive refreshments and goodies after all that bouncing.

Afasic Cymru free eventsContinuing our Christmas events, Caerphilly Miners Centre played host to our free Christmas film showing. The event was fully booked up and the children watched two short children’s Christmas films: Merry Madagascar and Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas followed by a craft session making Christmas cards. Father Christmas made another appearance and was very impressed by all the handmade Christmas cards.

Meanwhile in North Wales our Family Support Workers organised two steam train trips to go and visit Santa at his grotto. The first trip was from Dinas to Snowdon Ranger and the Talyllyn Santa Train took place the day after. Both trips took an hour and a half on the train whilst featuring picturesque views of Snowdonia. The children met Santa at his festive grotto to receive their presents before steaming off on the train home again.

We hope that these events were enjoyed by all! We aim to organise many more family events this year as 2017 marks the 15th Anniversary of Afasic Cymru.

We were invited as a family to the Christmas train in Dinas, we as a family are so grateful for this special day, my little boy Ryan has SLI and has found some of the work he does at school a little bit of a challenge, his grandfather to whom he was so close to was very unwell over the Christmas period, and I feel the kids had to come to the hospital a lot during the holidays, it wasn’t very fair on them, the train was a big surprise for them and it was a lovely distraction for them, we have since lost my father in law, thank you for this opportunity.
