Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)

Developmental Language Disorder Awareness Day - 22 September 2017A recent process led by Professor Dorothy Bishop and Maggie Snowling of RALLI aimed to reach a consensus about terminology in this area. After months of discussion and review we are delighted to confirm that the agreed term is now Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and it replaces other terms such as Learning Language Impairment (LLI) and Specific Language Impairment (SLI). We hope this will help lead to improved awareness, identification and ultimately support.

DLD affects approximately 2 students in every classroom. We know speech and language therapy and school support is beneficial for these students. We know this difficulty is often hidden and can be difficult to identify.

There will be a DLD Awareness Day on 22 September. We need your support to help us spread the word. More information to follow shortly.
